Topic: How We Are Monopolized. From the airlines we fly to the food we eat, how a tiny group of corporations have come to dominate every aspect of our lives.

Speaker: David Dayen, author of Monopolized: Life in an Age of Corporate Power and Chain of Title. Dayen writes regularly for The Intercept and The Nation and has just been appointed the editor of the American Prospect.

Reasons for addressing monopolies (and mergers:) Medical mergers and acquisitions are the leading cause of escalating healthcare costs in the U.S. Katherine Gudiksen, of UC San Francisco Law School, confirmed this information before the Oregon Senate Committee on Health Care On November 6, 2023.

Corvallis Clinic in Oregon is proposing to merge with Optum Oregon Management Services Organization (MSO). Judging from reports from patients and doctors about Optum in Seattle and Eugene, the likely result of the merger would be increased costs, loss of local control of health care, doctors leaving the community, and poorer healthcare outcomes.
